Download a pdf about Sound Practice here.

A pdf file about the process of refining linseed oil is here. This is all text, no photos, for printing out.

To get a pdf file detailing solvent-free methods of traditional oil painting used on this site, click here.

A step by step, lavishly illustrated tutorial about how to make the putty medium, the inexpensive, archival key to solvent-free painting with traditional materials.

Listed in order from less to more complex, from empirical to, well, more philosophical. All downloadable, please feel free to contact me with any questions. Donations to the cause are now gratefully accepted via PayPal.

sound practice, preferred materials
A simple, topic-by-topic guide to the new old painting practice. What I've found to work based on research into older texts compared with modern research such as that reported in the National Gallery Technical Bulletins.

Download the printer friendly pdf here.

oils 101
An introduction to oil painting from a traditional materials perspective, including bibliography. These are the concepts worked out in the last twelve years of teaching introductory oil painting. If the various picture book guides aren't helping, you might like this.

black & white
An exercise illustrating the use of the putty medium and the older technique of painting from the envelope by exploiting the temperature shifts inherent in transparent, translucent and opaque paint. This allows more "color" to be made with just black and white than might be thought possible.

painters
A quick overview of painters that have meant more than usual to me, some household names, some not.

outside 101
A general introduction to working outside in oil, including a reconstruction of Corot's open air technique. Includes virtual bug juice.

color
Modern painting tends to use color at the expense of harmony. Various remedies with copious illustrations, many limited palette variations. Includes an explanation of how color makes light.

formulas
These use predominantly traditional painting ingredients with an emphasis on the reconstruction of a 17th century type of process.

just oil
All material related to refining and modifying the oil, plus oil only mediums.

living craft
Anything theoretical/editorial/rhetorical from Formulas has migrated here, including more detailed process photos of materials being made.

putty tutorial
Step-by-step illustrated tutorial on how to make the putty medium.

the putty medium
The texts from two workshops on the putty medium, one on the putty itself, the other on direct painting in the manner described by Hoogstraten using a limited palette and the putty medium.

unsun oil
An oil I've been developing for the last few years based on what Northern painters might have made as a sun oil substitute.
